About the game

Hangman is a word game you play in your browser: the game picks a secret word and you try to uncover it by guessing one letter at a time. Every letter that is not in the word draws another part of the stick figure on the gallows, and your goal is to complete the word before the figure is finished.

You are allowed six mistakes: head, body, two arms and two legs. The word comes from a list of 14 everyday terms, such as star, bicycle, volcano and elephant. If you want longer words and more clues, try Find the Word or browse other word games.

Your result for a match is the number of mistakes you made before getting the word right, and fewer is better. Solving it without a single wrong letter is the best result possible.

How to play

1. Use the keyboard to type one letter at a time, from A to Z.
2. If the letter is in the word, it shows up in every place where it occurs.
3. If the letter is not in the word, the figure gets another part and the mistake counter goes up, to a limit of 6.
4. Repeated letters are ignored and do not count as a mistake. Letters already used are listed next to the gallows.
5. You win by revealing every letter and lose on the sixth mistake, when the game shows what the word was. Use Restart for a new word.

Game modes

• 1 player. Single player: one word per match, with no time limit. You play only against the gallows and what counts is the number of mistakes.

Tips

• Repeated letters do not cost a mistake, so check the list of used letters before you guess.
• With six mistakes to spare, start with common letters and only risk the rare ones once the shape of the word starts to show.
