About the game

Realms is a turn-based strategy game you play in the browser, in the style of conquest games. You lead a kingdom on a 20 by 14 tile map, found cities, research technologies, train units and contest the world against two computer-controlled kingdoms.

You start with one city, a warrior, a worker, a settler and 10 gold, all hidden by fog that is revealed as your units explore. The map is new every game, with plains, forests, mountains and water, and all kingdoms start at peace.

There are four ways to win: reach 5 cities, discover all 5 technologies, be the last kingdom standing, or have the most cities when turn 200 arrives. Losing your whole kingdom, or seeing one of the AIs meet one of these conditions first, ends the match. Your score is the number of turns it took you to win, and fewer is better.

How to play

  1. Press Start and click a unit or city of your kingdom to select it. Units have action buttons; cities have a production queue.
  2. Move highlights the reachable tiles: click one of them. Terrains cost different movement (plains 1, forest 2, mountain 3) and water cannot be crossed.
  3. The settler uses Found city on a plains or forest tile at least 3 tiles from another city. The worker uses Improve terrain inside your territory to give +1 food.
  4. In each city, build a queue of up to 6 items between units and buildings. Under Research, pick the technology that will unlock new units and buildings.
  5. To attack you have to be at war: under Diplomacy, use Declare war. With a military unit next to the enemy, use Attack. Each unit attacks once per turn.
  6. When you are done, click End turn: cities produce, research advances and the computer kingdoms play. Use Save and Continue where I left off to keep the match.

Game modes

  • 1 player. A single-player game against two computer-controlled kingdoms. The AI turns run when you end yours, and you can save and continue later.

Tips

  • Settlers only leave a city with population 2 or more, and cost 1 population. Let the city grow before queuing a settler.
  • Every three military units cost 1 gold per turn in upkeep. An army that is too big can weigh on your treasury.
  • The Wall, which requires Bronze, raises a city's defense, and forest and mountain terrain give a defense bonus to whoever stands on them.
  • Asking for peace does not always work: the other kingdom accepts about half the time, so do not count on it to save you from an attack.

Frequently asked questions

How many kingdoms compete for the map?

Three: yours and two computer-controlled kingdoms. The map is 20 by 14 tiles and is generated anew for every match.

What are the technologies and what does each one unlock?

There are five: Agriculture (Granary), Writing (Library), Bronze (Spearman and Wall), Trade, which requires Writing (Market), and Horseback Riding, which requires Bronze (Knight). Discovering all five also wins the match.

Can I save and continue later?

Yes. There are Save and Continue where I left off buttons, and the game also saves by itself when you end turns. New game starts a fresh match.

How is the score calculated?

By the number of turns it took you to win. The fewer turns, the better the score. Only won matches count.
