About the game

Checkers is a board and strategy game you play in the browser against the computer. You command the red pieces, which start at the bottom of the 8x8 board, and try to capture or block every black one.

Capturing is mandatory: if any of your pieces can jump an opponent, you may only make capturing moves. A capture can chain while another jump is available, and regular pieces can also capture backward. Reaching the last row crowns a king, which moves and captures along every diagonal, one square at a time.

You lose when you run out of pieces or legal moves. If you win, your score is the number of moves you made, so fewer is better. There is an undo button that goes back to your last move, and the game shows how many pieces each side has left.

  • Plain red piece shown from the side, shaped like a disc
    Red piece (yours)
  • Plain black disc-shaped piece with a gray rim
    Black piece (the computer's)

How to play

  1. Click a red piece to select it; the possible destination squares are highlighted.
  2. Click a highlighted square to move. Only the dark squares are used.
  3. If a capture is available it is mandatory: only pieces that can jump may be moved.
  4. In a multi-jump, the highlight shows the final square of the route: one click there makes all the jumps at once.
  5. Reach the far row to become a king (the piece with a crown).
  6. Use Undo to go back to your last move if you slipped.
  • Red piece with a golden crown on top
    Red king
  • Black piece with a golden crown on top
    Black king

Game modes

  • 1 player. One player with red against the computer with black. A win records your number of moves; fewer is better.

Tips

  • Mandatory capture can work for you: offer a piece to force the computer to move and open a chain of jumps for you.
  • Before advancing, check whether the piece ends up on a square the computer can jump.
  • Since the score counts moves, multi-jumps are worth a lot: a chain of jumps is a single move for you.
  • Made a mistake? The Undo button goes back to your previous move, as many times as you need.

Frequently asked questions

Is capturing mandatory in Checkers?

Yes. If any of your pieces can capture, you may only make capturing moves. Multi-jumps are allowed too and continue while a jump is available.

How does the king work in this game?

A piece that reaches the last row becomes a king, shown with a crown. The king can move and capture on all four diagonals, one square at a time.

How is the score calculated?

When you win, your score is the number of moves you made, and fewer is better. Losing doesn't record a score.

Can I undo a move?

Yes. The Undo button goes back to your last move, together with the computer's reply, and can be used more than once.
